LHS boys 2-0 vs. NHS
Liberty’s boys’ swim team is currently undefeated, having won its most recent meets against Northampton, 115-52 and 122.5-70.5, last Monday and Thursday.
“We have five meets left and we have to make the most of them,” said Hurricane captain Patrick Gilhool on Monday. “Undefeated is always nice, but the big competition is Emmaus and Parkland, and I thought we had a good shot at beating Parkland this year, but we just didn’t get to swim them.”
Gilhool was a double event winner on Monday, placing first in the 100 butterfly in 54.38 and in the 100 backstroke in 56.71.
“I’m trying to get my second 50 down (in the fly) because that’s the important one, but it’s just hard because we only had two or three weeks of training, so I’m trying to get my endurance up,” Gilhool said. “It’s hard mentally and physically to see you’re swimming as fast as you can and you don’t hit the time that you did last year. We were hitting best times, and this year, it’s a struggle to get to where you were last year.”
Addison Collins was also a double event winner on Monday, taking first place in the 50 free in 22.07 and in the 100 free in 48.91.
“I was trying to go sub 22 in the 50, and I was a second within my P.R. in the 100,” said Collins, who is also a captain for the Hurricanes. “Obviously right now, we have no one to swim against except our teammates, but at closer meets- like, this would have been one and last week’s against Nazareth- it really pushes me when there’s someone next to me I have to catch up to, or we’re going off at the same time, and it’s a matter of I’m going last, and he’s going last, and who’s going to win the event.”
Tim Wetmore was Liberty’s third double event winner on Monday with a first place finish in the 200 free in 2:05.40 and in the 500 free in 5:33.47.
Danny Lehr, Sean McGuire, Gilhool, and Collins won the 200 medley relay in 1:43.41; Lehr, Corbin Eisenhardt, Ben Service, and Caleb Stein won the 200 free relay in 1:37.79; and in the last event of the day, Service, Gilhool, Stein, and Collins won the 400 free relay in 3:30.30.
“We have a pool of guys who are really close together in our 100 freestyles, so we’re trying to see where they fit best,” said Gilhool. “I might take a better relay start off of Benny (Service) than I do Addison, so they put Benny, and then me, and then Addison. It’s just the way they swim; I swim differently than them.
“They usually try putting one of the top two swimmers first because you want to get ahead of the wave, especially at districts and big meets. If your relay gets behind and you’re getting that wave, it’s almost impossible to catch up.”
On Thursday, Collins won the 200 IM in 2:07.53.
Malcolm Collins, Jacob Scheirer, and Carson Vella swam to a one, two, three finish in the 50 free in 24.24, 27.00, and 28.52.
Gilhool took first place in the 100 fly in 53.25.
Another one, two, three finish came in the 100 free with Service in 52.72, Anthony Lin in 56.80, and Scheirer in 1:02.15.
Wetmore won the 500 free in 5:38.30, and Addison Collins took first in the 100 breast in 1:01.26.
Backstrokers Gilhool, Lehr, and Service went one, two, three in 54.89, 1:02.40, and 1:02.48.
The Hurricanes won all three relays with Service, McGuire, Gilhool, and Addison Collins in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.64; McGuire, Lehr, Jeffrey Eisenhardt, and Corbin Eisenhardt in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:38.63; and Service, Addison Collins, Gilhool, and Malcolm Collins in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:36.30.
The Hurricanes will have a bye week this week. Competing only against teams within Northampton County, Bethlehem Catholic doesn’t have a swim team; otherwise, this week would be a meet against the Hawks.
Liberty is scheduled to take on Easton on Feb. 8 and 11.
