Liberty girls fall to NHS

Liberty’s girls’ basketball coach Andy Wescoe was anxious to examine the video after the Hurricanes’ 65-34 loss to Northampton in its season opener last Thursday at Liberty.

“I think we got off to a good start,” Coach Wescoe said. “We ran our stuff and went through those options comfortably, and then something just changed. For us. Mentally. And we couldn’t get it back. And I’m not sure I know quite what it is.”

Hurricane guard Layla Orth, who had 12 points on the night, hit a three pointer to start the scoring for both teams. Northampton guard Morgan Sterner responded with a three for the K-Kids, but Orth hit another.

A layup by Liberty guard Jess Farrell, who had 10 points, would be the last before Northampton began to pull away, and before time ran out to end the first quarter, Liberty forward Erin Eisenhart was benched with two fouls.

“We just didn’t stay with it in terms of what we’ve practiced and what we reviewed,” said Wescoe.

With such a smooth start in the opening minutes, Coach Wescoe attempted to pull his team together, reminding them of things they already knew and urging them to follow through.

But the second quarter opened in Northampton’s favor when Grace Lesko, Nicole Yellen, and Sterner combined for six points. A free throw by Orth would be the only point scored for Liberty before the half.

“That’s a good experienced team that wasn’t going to go away and certainly played well tonight,” said Wescoe. “Northampton played well.”

Rebounding also proved to be a challenge for the smaller-sized Hurricanes.

“We’re going to have to compete as a group. We talk about boxing out, and we work on it,” Wescoe said. “That being said, they’re a big, strong team, and that was a challenge for us. To rebound when we did get a stop and get that rebound and then get into our transition game, we knew that was going to be a big hurdle.”

Lesko was the game’s top scorer with 18 points.

Other scorers for the Hurricanes were Eisenhart with six, Emma Pukszyn with three and Alondra Cruz with three points.

This week, Liberty will have met its hometown rival, Bethlehem Catholic, on Tuesday at Becahi before hosting the Golden Hawks on Thursday.
