LHS boys top NAHS

It seemed fitting that the Hurricanes’ only senior boy swim captain, Ben Service, would lead off the 200 medley relay, the first boys’ event of the first virtual swim meet of the season in which Liberty defeated Nazareth, 101-75, last Tuesday at Liberty.

“It was awesome being back in the water. I can’t remember the last time I swam with everyone, probably the beginning of March or something like that,” Service said. “It’s weird. There’s not a lot of cheering. Most people are focused on doing their own things.”

Service, along with Malcolm Collins, Patrick Gilhool, and Corbin Eisenhardt took first place in the medley relay with a time of 1:46.31.

In fact, Liberty’s boys swept all relays with a win in the 200 free relay by Addison Collins, Malcolm Collins, Danny Lehr, and Caleb Stein in 1:34.55, and the 400 free relay by Addison Collins, Corbin Eisenhardt, Gilhool, and Service in 2:28.63.

“I like being an anchor. That’s my favorite part,” said Service. “I’m always racing the clock. Everyone on the guys’ team remember their times from last year and exactly what they swam on the last meet, so we’re always trying to push ourselves to beat that time.”

Individual event winners for Liberty were Addison Collins in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.92, and the 100 free with a time of 49.07, Gilhool in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.72 and the 100 backstroke in 58.88, and Malcolm Collins in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.06.

Last Thursday, the Hurricane boys dove in and did it all over again, defeating Nazareth for the second time in a week, 102-74.

“Today, they just went for it, so we have better times today overall,” said Liberty coach Reik Foust. “Guys, we’ve been moving all over the place, and we’re starting to settle in, but we don’t have a lot of to and fro with the girls.”

In individual events, Addison Collins repeated first place finishes in the 200 free in 1:48.28 and the 100 free in 47.74, Gilhool was a repeat winner in the 100 fly in 55.20, and Sean McGuire won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.02.

In relays, Stein, Eisenhardt, Malcolm Collins, and Addison Collins combined to win the 200 free relay in 1:33.98, and Gilhool, Service, Stein, and Addison Collins swam to a first place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:29.75.

This week, Liberty will face, virtually, Northampton on Monday and Thursday.
