JM was ‘it’ for Wilson

James Madison University women’s basketball coach Sean O’Regan told recruit Kourtney Wilson that if he could get two or three diamonds on the team, there’s no way the Dukes wouldn’t get to the league final.

So when O’Regan gave Wilson a call on Nov. 15, the Bethlehem Catholic guard said, “Coach, this is it.”

In fact, Wilson always had the feeling James Madison University was it, a feeling that was with Wilson since the beginning of her recruitment process and evolved into catching herself using the word, when, instead of the word, if.

“I’m 110 percent committed,” she said. “I’m really confident about the decision I made.”

Although Wilson had time to spare in making her decision, relief that the recruitment process is over really hasn’t entered the Becahi junior’s mind.

“From the beginning, I wanted the process to be fun, but the difference is I’m committed now, so I can shift my mindset to something else,” she said. “I had other scholarship offers. It was difficult to get on other campuses, but I always had the feeling James Madison was it.”

Wilson had been developing a relationship with Coach O’Regan and his staff for two years.

“He talked to me about my position on the team, being a combo guard and making an impact,” said Wilson. “He’s very energetic and cares about his players and his staff. He’s definitely a family guy and shows that.”

In addition, associate head coach Ashley Langford is a cousin of Wilson’s mother. And Lancaster Catholic alumna Kiki Jefferson, whom the Hawks have battled the past two years, possibly going on three years, plays for the Dukes.

“My family’s from Harrisburg, and her family’s from Lancaster, so both our families know each other,” Wilson said.

After participating in a few basketball camps at JMU, Wilson went on an academic tour in November.

“A student took me around, and I got to see the campus and facilities,” said Wilson. “I definitely liked, in general, how the campus was set up, and the student was very informative about everything. It has a homey feeling to it, so I liked how I felt in person.”

Wilson is still thinking about her choice of a major.

“At first I was really interested in law, but now I’m leaning more toward business,” she said.
