Sherwood W. Silfies Sr.
Sherwood “Woody” “Chow” Walter Silfies Sr., 96, of Macungie, died Jan. 17, 2021, at Luther Crest, Allentown. He and his wife, Betty I. Silfies, celebrated 40 years of marriage in July 2020. Born in Bath, he was the son of the late Harry Silfies and Mabel (Scott) Silfies.
He graduated from Nazareth High School in 1943.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific achieving the rank of staff sergeant.
He worked in the banking industry for 40 years, until his retirement. He served as the treasurer for the Borough of Bath for 21 years.
He was a lifetime member and past commander of the Bath American Legion, Post 470, Bath, a member of the VFW in Macungie, a past chairman of the Pennsylvania State American Legion Golf Tournament, a life member and former volunteer firefighter of the Bath Fire Co. and a director and past president of the Northampton County Bankers Association. He was an active veteran and volunteered 1200 hours for the Veteran’s Clinic, in Allentown.
He was a former member of Christ Church of Bath, U.C.C.
He was a lifetime golfer who loved camping and visited Newfoundland and every U.S. state except Hawaii with his wife in their RV. He loved dancing, particularly the Chicken Dance, and would dance at the drop of a hat.
He is survived by his wife; children, Sherwood “Woody” Jr. and his wife, Margie Halpern, Barbara L. and her husband, Gary Gumlock, Michael, Jean and her husband, Craig Roberts; stepdaughter, Janice and her husband, Larry Speer and their son Nolan; stepson, David Zipf and his wife, Diana and sons Alex and Andrew; grandchildren: Jamie and her husband, Jonathan Broad, Carrie and her husband, Craig Kopec, Aaron Cleary and his wife, Katie, Jordan Cleary, Jacob, Leigh and her husband, Jacob Lance and Chad Roberts and his wife, Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Hayley, Natalie and Alyssa Broad, Cordyn and Camryn Kopec, Thomas Lance, Reagan, Conrad and Brynn Cleary and Adalyn Budd; a sister, Marie Fehnel, of Nazareth; many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Andrea, wife of Richard Cleary last year; brothers, William, Harry, Donald, Carl, Franklin and Herbert; sisters, Lorraine and Helen Mae; first wife, Doris Leigh, who died in 2005.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Christ Church of Bath, U.C.C., 109 S. Chestnut St., Bath, 18014 or to the Veterans Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre.
Military honors will be private with his family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Bartholomew Funeral Home, Bath.
