Lehigh resident donates fence for new dog park
Lehigh Township will be getting a new dog park, courtesy of township resident Katherine Mack.
Plans were unveiled at the Jan. 12 meeting for a 0.7-acre area for large dogs and a half-acre area for small dogs. The spaces will be separated by a fence in the flat area of Delps Park currently set up as a soccer field. The area would be surrounded by fence donated by Mack, who said she has asked Triboro to do the job.
Triboro will also be donating $1,000 for amenities such as benches and shaded structures inside the fenced area. Concrete for the project will be donated by David Hess.
The board approved a motion to move forward with construction of the project.
Police Chief Scott Fogel reported receiving a call from a resident regarding concerns about a private shooting range near his home. The complainant reported automatic weapon fire and explosives have taken a toll on his quality of life, claiming his family has felt a need to leave their home while the activity goes on. He said they can’t even hold a conversation in their own home because of the noise.
“The guy has no respect for anyone,” he said.
Fogel said the range has been approved for a long time, but he will need to find out if the owner has the proper permits. He believes the owner has a fireworks permit. He also stated none of the existing ordinances, such as noise or nuisance, really deal with the problem of the quality-of-life issues.
“We have no mechanism to re-evaluate a range or even see if it still exists,” Fogel said. “If a property is sold, the new owner should have to come in for permits, but that is not being enforced.”
It was decided the chief look at the ordinance and make recommendations, so the board of supervisors can make some decisions about how to move forward.
After a revote, Alice Rehrig was appointed township manager; however, the position of vacancy board chairman remains open with the topic being tabled for the time being.
A motion to advertise ordinance 2021-1 amending Chapter 70, Earth Disturbance, was carried.
