Updates on the BAVTS House Project

Masonry students have not been idle in perfecting their skills during the cold weather. They’ve been building mirrored serpentine walls with a corbelle soldier course and a rowlock cap. Besides strengthening their professional terminology – corbelled, which means the lip pushes out – students practiced the layout of two straight lines with repeating half circles. They used various tools throughout the process including a level, striker which prepares the finish and brick brush for clean-up. Additionally, they did straight cuts and diagonal cuts using the wet chop saw.

Two strong employability skills included teamwork, as the students had to work together and learn to visually trust their eyes to connect the serpentine. Another factor in completing the wall was to use math estimation to determine the 3,738 brick, 27 bags of mortar and 4 yards of sand to complete the project.

The National Technical Honor Society recently elected officers for the 2020-2021 school year. The following students were selected by their peers for the position: Kaila Gazaway, president; Christina Cordero, vice president; Cheyenne Orendach, secretary; and Morgan Biggs and Ashley Dronenburg, co-treasurers.

Building Trades student Jayden Gerstenberg, a Saucon Valley sophomore, is working on cleaning out the mortar joints on the Bethlehem AVTS House Project on Skills Hill.
Brooke Brinker, a junior Electrical Construction student from Saucon Valley, is retrofitting a vinyl surface mount electrical box for a missing outdoor receptacle.
