The Rev. William M. Horn
The Rev. William M. Horn, 76, died peacefully Jan. 14, 2021, in his home at Luther Crest, South Whitehall Township, surrounded by his loving family.
His death followed a battle with Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia.
Born Nov. 19, 1944, in Marion, Va., he was the son of the Rev. Dr. Henry E. Horn and Catherine (Stainken) Horn.
He was married more than 51 years to his beloved wife, Lorraine (Shade).
A 1966 graduate of Cambridge High and Latin School, Cambridge, Mass., he was awarded the Charles Crowley Award for Outstanding Scholar/Athlete of the City of Cambridge.
He continued his education at Gettysburg College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology.
He graduated from the Lutheran Seminary at Philadelphia in 1970 with a M.Div. degree.
Ordained in 1970, he served Zion Lutheran Church, Minersville, and St. John Lutheran Church, St. Johns.
During that time, he earned a Master of Arts degree in counseling from Marywood University, Scranton.
He did a one-year CPE internship at Byberry State Hospital, Philadelphia, before accepting the position of director of Pastoral Care at Good Shepherd Home, Allentown.
He served Good Shepherd for 29-and-a-half years before retiring in 2010.
During his time there, he received recognition from community agencies for his work with the disabled, mentally ill and the Latino community.
He was honored with both the Raker Memorial Award and the Raker Spirit Award.
The former recognizes community members whose contributions honor the legacy of the Rev. John H. and D. Estella Raker, founders of Good Shepherd.
The latter is awarded to the employee who most embodies the spirit of the Rakers.
He was a member of the Association of Professional Chaplains and served as the chairman of the Pennsylvania State Continuing Education Committee. He also served on several committees of the Northeast Pennsylvania Synod of the Lutheran Church in America.
An active member of the former St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Allentown, he served on committees and taught confirmation classes there.
At the time of his death, he was a member of Nativity Lutheran Church, Allentown.
He enjoyed reading, traveling, bird watching, gardening, singing and attending concerts.
He is remembered by all who knew him for his sense of humor, kindness, compassion and selfless service to others.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William D. and wife, Bridget, of Allentown; daughters Rachel Gohman, wife of Michael, of Fogelsville, Sarah Croft, wife of James, of West Chester; grandchildren Trevor and Keira Horn, Sarah and Stephen Gohman, Paige and Madeleine Croft; brothers Dr. David J. Horn (Rosalind), Worcester, Mass., twin Charles Horn (Rita), Westhampton, Mass., Dr. Richard Horn, Woburn, Mass., Michael Horn (Patricia), Watertown, Mass., Dr. Andrew Horn (Martha), Halifax, Nova Scotia; sisters Jean Swanson (Howard) Chicago, Ill., Marguerite Horn, Springfield, Mass., and Eleanor Grotzky (Johannes), Munich, Germany; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Christian Michael, and a brother, Dr. Henry Horn (Elizabeth), Princeton, N.J.
A celebration of his life will be held when large gatherings are deemed safe.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network or Institute for Religious and Cultural Understanding at Muhlenberg College.
