BC girls set for season
All is going well for Bethlehem Catholic’s girls’ basketball team even with the recently-ended suspension of winter high school sports in the state of Pennsylvania as ordered by Gov. Tom Wolf.
“Things went well leaving off with our program,” said Becahi coach Jose Medina. “We got the girls together in mid-September twice a week for open gym and strength and conditioning training until mid-November. We then had tryouts and were able to practice every day for about three weeks until we got shut down. The girls were sad to stop, but we all understood why.”
In the meantime, the Hawks participated in strength and conditioning workouts on Zoom. Some of the players got together for outdoor workouts as well.
“We have many girls who are working hard and competing to be in the [starting] lineup,” Medina said.
Juniors Cydney Stanton (forward), Keyara Walters (guard), and Kourtney Wilson (guard) are projected to be three of the Hawks’ starters as soon as the season resumes.
Two injuries of note are those of senior Emily Sekerak (center), who is out for the season, and junior Stephanie Donato (guard), who has a slight chance to return to action in February.
Also on the roster is Easton Area High School senior transfer Cassidy Saylor (forward/center), who is ineligible.
Completing Becahi’s roster are senior Marcela Banuelos (forward), sophomores Kendra Rigo (forward/center), Gabby Maldonado (guard), Yarian Fernandez (guard/forward), and freshmen Cici Hernandez (guard), Akasha Santos (forward/center), Briana McKelvey (guard), Mirynet Colon (guard), Lexi McNeil (guard), and Ella Bincarosky (guard/forward).
Coach Medina will be assisted by Arnold Alleyne, Dwight Repsher, Calvin Arrick and Mike McKelvey.
“Our team strengths are speed, youth, and athleticism,” Medina said. “We have three experienced guards who will be leaders on and off the floor. We also have experienced seniors who will be very important with their knowledge of the game and assisting the younger girls with the attention to detail in many areas of understanding our program expectations.”
Aside from conference play, the Hawks had games lined up in Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C. this season. Whether they will be played is to be determined.
“It’s all about getting our girls and our program maximum exposure and playing in showcase events,” said Medina. “These events have our girls playing against some of the best players and teams in the country. Our girls benefit from playing against the best.”
Medina will look to Sekerak, Banuelos, Donato, and Saylor for lending their game experience and leadership this season.
“This is a strong group of kids with many games played and knowledge of the game that will have our players in the right spots in games, at practice, and inside the classroom,” Medina said.
