STUDENT PROFILE Kaila Gazaway, Bethlehem Area VTS Coordinated by Julie Swan

Grade: 12th

Family members: Andrew Decker, Kristi Decker, Kurt Decker, Andrea Decker, Natasha Decker

Favorite subject: In high school my favorite subject is English. It is my favorite because you have the opportunity to be creative in the writing process. In technical school I take Health Careers. It is my favorite class because my teachers and fellow classmates drive me to become the best version of myself.

Activities: My activities include SkillsUSA, National Technical Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars Ambassador, and AP and honors classes.

Next steps: After high school, I plan to attend Advanced Individual Training for the Army. After I complete this I will attend a university to study nursing and be a part of ROTC.

Career goals: My career goal is to be a Neurosurgeon.

Heroes and why: My first hero is Mickey Mantle, who was a center fielder, right baseman, and first baseman for the New York Yankees. He is my hero because on and off the field he showed compassion and leadership for his fellow players. My second hero is my mother because she has made me into the person I am today. When something looks impossible to achieve, she gives me inspiration to keep fighting.

Hobbies: My hobbies include playing basketball, drawing, playing piano, writing, and listening to music.

Current job: Currently I am a stocker at Redner’s Warehouse Market in Northampton. Also I serve in the United States Army Reserves as a Medical Logistics Specialist.

Volunteer/community work: I do not participate in these due to having a full schedule.

Likes: Some of the things that I like are the New York Giants, Breaking Benjamin, cars, astronomy, and collecting multiple types of cards.

Dislikes: Some of the things that I dislike are receiving any grade lower than a B, and people who are unhonest.

Greatest accomplishment (so far): My greatest accomplishment is receiving sharpshooter while at Basic Combat Training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Advice for peers: My piece of advice for peers is that even when the world changes around you, do not let it affect the person you really are.
