LIBERTY HS NEWS-The show must go on
By Mia Seneck
It’s always a great day to be a Hurricane. Liberty has been doing the utmost for its community as it closely adheres to COVID-19 guidelines during school and activities. The students of Liberty never fail to put their talent in the spotlight, despite the hardships they have been faced with this school year.
New records were accomplished by two Liberty cross country runners in the District 11 competition. Throughout their four years at Liberty, Cole Frank and Emily Jobes have had multiple high placements in district and EPC competitions. On Oct. 28, Liberty brought home two District 11 champions for the first time since 2004. Frank finished at 17:32 and Jobes finished at 20:46. This was the perfect outcome after an extremely successful season.
The Liberty versus Freedom rivalry game has been a Bethlehem tradition for decades. Students dressed in red and gold would fill the stadium as others would gather to tailgate and participate in activities related to the tradition. Unfortunately, the game had to be postponed and then later canceled due to COVID-19, which put a heartbreaking end to Liberty’s football season. Students maintained their school spirit by decorating the halls with red and blue as they do each year.
Liberty theater always manages to put on a wonderful show for the community in both the fall and spring. Although their productions are unable to be performed live, the show must go on. The fall production, “Almost Maine,” premiered virtually in November for friends and family to watch in the comfort of their homes. The cast list has been released for the spring musical, “Urinetown.” The seniors will take the lead with the upcoming show as they fill most of the starring roles.
On Dec. 1, Liberty was able to host its annual National Honors Society induction. To make this event possible, it was held through a virtual live stream for families to view. Although the event looked different from previous years, it was a memorable moment for over 60 juniors and seniors who became members.
The beginning of winter sports and activities has been pushed back to a later date. Rather than starting in mid-November, winter sports are unable to begin until Jan. 11 due to COVID-19. The athletes and coaches hope to have a quick recovery from this setback and get to the unfinished business from last season’s cancellations.
Tis the season of giving back to the community. Liberty students from both student government and the interact club are in the process of organizing virtual events and drives to donate toys and clothing to families in need throughout the month of December. Check out the Liberty website to see how you can become involved.
The season of submitting college applications is upon us. Liberty offers plenty of opportunities to have instant admission days through local colleges like Moravian College or Northampton Community College. There are also many scholarships available for applicants through Naviance. Though the pandemic hinders the ability to have in-person college visits, many virtual visits and college fairs can be found on Schoology or the Liberty website. If help is needed to complete a college application, closely check your email and Schoology for updates from your counselor.
