With the anticipated potential of a large accumulation of snow on Dec. 16, Pennsylvania State Police Troop M remind motorists of the following:
•Any vehicle left on roadways or berms prior to the snow will be towed.
•Slow down your speed and maintain a safe distance to the vehicle in front that will allow enough time to stop your vehicle in case of an emergency.
•Before driving, make sure to clean the snow off your windshield, headlights, side-view mirrors and roof.
•If driving in adverse conditions, headlights must be turned on.
•Allow yourself plenty of time prior to departing for your destination.
•Be sure to have an emergency kit in your vehicle: fully charged cell phone, blankets, flashlight, bottled water, food, jumper cables and shovel.
•Avoid driving while fatigued.
Troop M Commanding Officer, Capt.Joseph F. Sokolofski emphasizes troopers will be proactively patrolling and assisting the public throughout the anticipated snow but reminds the public of the “Move Over” law which requires drivers approaching an emergency response area who are unable to safely merge into a lane further away from the response area to slow to at least 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit.
Drivers are reminded, when snow or ice is dislodged or falls from a moving vehicle and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or serious bodily injury, the operator of the vehicle from which the snow or ice dislodged, or falls shall be subjected to a fine of not less than $200 nor more than $1,000.00 for each offense.
Also, drivers are reminded no person shall drive any motor vehicle with any ice or snow on the front windshield which materially obstructs, obscures or impairs the drivers clear view of the highway or any intersecting highway. Violators are subjected to a summary fine.
