Garden club tours Delightful Dahlias Farm

By BARBARA CAMPBELL

Special to The Press

Members of the Parkland Garden Club recently visited Shirlene Moser’s Dahlia Farm in Lower Saucon Township.

The visit took place on a beautiful fall day, and the dahlias were at their peak.

In Moser’s garden there are more than 250 varieties and all the colors that can be imaged except for black or blue.

The dahlia farm encompasses 6 acres, but only one-and-a-half acres are planted in five different gardens.

Because of the zone, the dahlias need to be replanted each year and dug up each fall before temperatures drop to 25 degrees.

The tubers must be stored properly so they don’t freeze or they will go to mush.

The dahlia is in the potato family.

The garden club did the craft day which included a tour of the gardens where they saw all different varieties and colors of dahlias.

After the tour, lunch was served, and we had a demonstration and an opportunity to cut our own dahlias to make our own arrangements.

All the supplies to make our own arrangements were provided by Moser.

Proceeds that Moser and her family make selling dahlias are given to the local food bank.

To visit the Delightful Dahlia Farm, call Moser at 610-838-9975.
