Feeling festive
The spirit of Christmas has been shining brightly at the intersection of Front and Franklin streets in Whitehall Township. The corner home of Joe and Carol Polenchar, 36 Franklin St., has once again been strung up with an LED-lighted winter wonderland that harmoniously dances along to dozens of Christmas classics.
The show is hosted on radio station 92.3 FM, creating the perfect opportunity for a dazzling drive-by experience - totally socially distanced.
The Polenchars broke ground on this year’s display back in July, just to keep up with the growing collection. Over the last decade, the duo has accumulated 38,000 LED lights that are wrapped around Christmas props - each handcrafted from PVC piping. The lights can be seen from streets away, drawing in constant crowds over the last few years.
“There is something a little magical about seeing the lights in the dark,” mentioned Joe Polenchar, as he reflected on the show’s 13th anniversary. “It’s very uplifting for your spirits.”
The Polenchars knew they wanted to spread their light miles beyond its limits, so the couple began dedicating their show to Second Harvest Food Bank, 6969 Silver Crest Road, Allentown. The radio station gives a special shout-out to Second Harvest every six songs, and the Polenchars have provided a weatherproof bin to store any goods for those wanting to donate.
“We remain committed to helping fight hunger ‘one can at a time,’ using our light show as the vehicle,” said Joe Polenchar, while explaining the heart of his work.
It has now been eight years since this addition, and there has been continual growth in donations, he said.
While 2020 has brought constant gloom, opportunities like this remind us the light will always illuminate the dark and spirits will sing under any circumstance.
The Polenchars’ show runs 6-9:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 6-10:30 p.m. Fridays through Sundays until New Year’s Eve.
Consider bringing nonperishable goods, monetary donations or checks made payable to Second Harvest Food Bank.
Pack up the car, bring the cocoa and/or donations and the Polenchar family will “let it snow.”
