Coplay discusses grant applications
Coplay Borough Council President Louis Bodish rapped the gavel 7:20 p.m., ending the Nov. 10 council meeting. It was an efficient meeting that began 7 p.m.
The brevity broke no records, as a meeting held by former council president Richard Issermoyer around 1995 reportedly ended in a mere 11 minutes. That meeting is viewed as the unofficial shortest Coplay council meeting.
The 20-minute meeting Nov. 10 contained a remarkable 17 motions and resolutions approved.
The meeting was quick due to a lack of reports. There were no mayor, solicitor or engineer reports. Three council committees also had nothing to report. There was no unfinished business, new business and/or hearing of persons present.
Councilman Stephen Burker reported small items are being identified for inclusion into an upcoming Trexler grant application. For example, two metal picnic benches are requested for the borough’s community plaza at Second and Chestnut streets.
Burker also said Coplay Sports completed cleanup efforts, noting there may be more full refuse cans for sanitation crews to pick up.
Councilman Richard Kern noted the grant application for renovations and new equipment at the borough’s tot lot on South Fifth Street and playground equipment at the Saylor Parkway on North Second Street is moving forward. The grant, if awarded, is for $75,000 to be spent over three years.
Bodish announced former council member and current Ironton Rail Trail liaison Dave Royer will not seek reappointment as the liaison to the IRT. Bodish noted longtime IRT activist and former Coplay mayor Joseph J. Bundra is expected to apply for the role.
In a trash and yard waste pickup update, Bodish announced the borough office will be closed Nov. 26 and 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Therefore, recycling pickup will be Nov. 25.
The Nov. 27 yard waste pickup is canceled, with the final yard waste pickup Dec. 4.
The next Coplay council meeting - a workshop - is 7 p.m. Dec. 1. The meeting is virtual.
