Board names curriculum director

A new director of curriculum and instruction has been appointed to succeed the longtime director of curriculum and instruction in Northampton Area School District.
The NASD Board of Education voted unanimously 9-0 at the Nov. 9 meeting to appoint Michelle Schoeneberger to the position, effective July 1, 2021, at a salary of $116,000, with benefits.
Schoeneberger will succeed Lydia Hanner, whose retirement, effective June 30, 2021, was accepted by a 9-0 vote at the Oct. 26 board meeting.
In other business at the Nov. 9 board meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to approve:
• Revised NASD phased school reopening health and safety plan, effective Aug. 11. Since the plan may be subject to further revision from time to time as required by changing circumstances or commonwealth orders and guidance, the superintendent of schools is hereby authorized to implement changes to the plan as necessary and thereafter submit a revised plan for review and approval by the school board. The plan and changes to the plan will be distributed electronically to all school district staff, parents/guardians and students and will be posted on the school district website, nasdschools.org.
• Authorize the school board president to execute the grant of easement to Verizon Pennsylvania LLC for the purposes as set forth in the easement, including the right to install and construct the utility facilities as described in the easement and sketch plans. The sketch plans depict the location of the utility facilities on NASD land in proximity to the northeast corner of Seemsville Road and Route 329.
• Caterina Mengel, 10-month secretary, at George Wolf Elementary School, effective Nov. 10, at $18.67 per hour, with benefits
• Temporary transfer of John Turk from third-shift custodian to head custodian at Northampton Area High School, effective Dec. 7 through Jan. 22, 2021, at a salary in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between NASD and Teamsters Local 773
• Contracts for services with Kelly M. Deibert and Ivan Rosario for ASL-English interpreter services, on an as-needed basis, Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2021
• Listing of 2020-21 winter season head coaches and assistant coaches with their designated payments, effective July 1-June 30, 2021
• Additions and deletions to the substitute listing for the 2020-21 school year
• Revised master district volunteer list for the 2020-21 school year
• Revised listing for extracurricular and supplemental positions for the 2020-21 school year
• Policies for adoption: discipline of students with disabilities, behavior support, confidentiality of special education student information, interscholastic athletics, sudden cardiac arrest, concussion policy, responsibility for student welfare, facilities and workplace safety, school calendar, public attendance at school events and school visitors
• Revised secondary school handbook for the 2020-21 school year
At the Oct. 26 board meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to approve:
• Job description for curriculum supervisor, secondary education grades 7-12
• Job descriptions for curriculum supervisor, grants and special programs and curriculum supervisor, elementary education K-6
• Voluntary transfer of Nicolette Teles from reading-writing supervisor K-12 to curriculum supervisor of grants and special programs, effective Jan. 1, 2021, with no change in salary. Teles will continue in her role as reading-writing supervisor K-12 until a replacement is chosen.
• Professional status and tenure for the teachers who have completed three years of teaching and have received six satisfactory evaluations: NAHS- Michael Miller, Izabela Pintarich; Northampton Area Middle School- Melissa Amberger, Jennifer Heitzman-Baggit, Emily Marley, Kelsey Morrison, Kaitlynn Wiltraut; George Wolf Elementary- Stephanie Chlebove-Hartrick, Elena Krupa
• Kaysee Rorer, long-term substitute speech and language pathologist, Moore Elementary School and Lehigh Elementary School, effective Nov. 5 through May 14, 2021, at $304.27 per diem
• Title III program Embracing English for Adults, held Nov. 5-19 online. Parents attend at no cost. There is no cost to NASD for providing the instruction. Staff members paid with Title III funds at no cost to NASD are EL instructor Stephanie Szoke, EL instructor Robin Matis and previous EL teachers Allison Hozza and Christine Nemeh.
• Resignation of Carol Colarusso, instructional assistant, for retirement, effective Jan. 4, 2021
The school board will be meeting 7 p.m. Nov. 23 in the cafeteria of NAMS, 1617 Laubach Ave., Northampton. The public may attend. Face masks must be worn, and social distancing will be observed.
