Hornets wins 32 for Sue

The Emmaus High School field hockey program has a long streak of winning district titles. For 31 straight years, the district champion in the sport of field hockey has worn green and gold. But the current crop of players did not let that long streak pressure them any more than it had to. They weren’t worried about the past. They wanted to take care of business in the present time.

Emmaus scored six unanswered goals in the final three quarters of play to defeat Easton 7-1 in the District 11 Class 3A final last Saturday afternoon at Whitehall High School. The streak improved to 32 consecutive seasons.

The Green Hornets (13-0 overall) remained undefeated and advanced to the PIAA quarterfinals, where they will take on District 2 champion Honesdale on Saturday at Memorial Field.

Emmaus has won 12 state titles in its history.

“It does mean a lot to me, but going into the game we didn’t put that in our heads,” Emmaus senior midfielder Annika Herbine said. “We’re only accountable for one district title. We’re not accountable for 32. We haven’t been alive for 32 years. We came into this game thinking we’re going to win it right off the bat. And we did.”

Herbine tallied a hat trick, with her first of the three goals proving to be the game-winner.

After her younger sister, Rachel Herbine, recorded the game’s opening goal just 3:26 into the contest, the Red Rovers (11-2) tied it just before the end of the first quarter as Jocelyn Morgan found the back of the cage with 33 seconds left. Lexi Kociban assisted on Herbine’s goal.

The game was controlled by Emmaus in the second stanza as the Herbine sisters combined for three goals in the 15-minute period to go ahead 4-1 at halftime.

“I think we’re even stronger together this year,” Herbine said about playing with her sister Rachel. “Last year, we faced some challenges and we fixed that this year.”

Madison Bruns scored in the third quarter and Annika Herbine and Jenna Villeneuve each broke through for one in the fourth to cap six straight goals for the Green Hornets.

With another trip to the big dance approaching, the Green Hornets are just happy to be able to keep playing.

“I feel bad for the teams that had their seasons canceled,” Herbine said. “We’re really fortunate to have a season, come this far and go into states.”

Emmaus outshot Easton 14-7 and held an 11-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Senior goalie Bailey Tietz finished with five saves in front of the cage. Villeneuve, Abby Burnett and Ava Zerfass all added assists for Emmaus.
