Catasauqua beats Minersville to open District 11 playoffs

Chad Beller nearly had a game two years ago like the one he had at Minersville last Friday.

This time around, the Catasauqua linebacker made it happen.

“I had a pick-six (interception for a touchdown) two years ago, but it got called back,” said the freshman. “But I never had more than one (interception) in a game.”

Beller had two interceptions - one returned 50 yards for a touchdown - and played well on defense to help lead the fifth-seeded Rough Riders to a stunning 31-12 victory at fourth-seeded Minersville in a District 11 Class 2A quarterfinal playoff game.

Catty will travel to Palisades for a Saturday 1 p.m. matinee in a semifinal matchup.

Overall, the Roughies swiped six interceptions from highly-touted freshman quarterback Connor Schwalm, who was coming off a 431-yard, five-touchdown performance the previous week.

“I could read him through his eyes,” said Beller. “I just went to where the ball was going. We rattled and hurt him all night.”

Catasauqua head coach Travis Brett credited defensive coordinator Tim Fisher and secondary coach Mike Gilmartin for their scheme.

“They both called a great game,” said Brett. “Mike had a nickel secondary and it really confused him (Schwalm). They (Minersville) couldn’t figure it out.”

The Roughies went into halftime with a 10-6 halftime lead, and they just missed padding their lead when Austin Brett was knocked out at the two-yard line in the closing seconds. Quarterback Nasir McLean (11-19, 126) hit Jacob Scheirer on a 22-yard scoring strike and Christian Fye booted a 39-yard field goal.

“He (Fye) has a great leg,” noted Brett. “His kick could easily have been a 50-plus one. He is going to have a great future.

“We felt pretty confident going into halftime. We made some offensive adjustments and they worked.”

Scheirer scored on a three-yard run and Fye later added a quarterback sneak before Beller’s return sealed the Roughies’ first district win since 2013.

Fye replaced McLean after he suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit out of bounds. He went through the percussion protocol and is expected to be back in the lineup.

“Fye came in and did a great job,” said Brett. “We felt pretty good, but Beller’s pick wrapped it up for us. He always is at the right place at the right time.”

Brett also credited the play of Elijah Soler, who had 52 yards rushing and was their leading tackler. Anthonie Hunsicker, who returned from a groin injury, had a stellar night on defense.

Cornerback Wyatt Younes also had an outstanding night with two interceptions along with solo efforts from Soler and Austin Brett.

“Soler came around after some injuries and had a big game,” added Brett. “We only played Hunsicker on defense because of his groin injury, and he was really disruptive up front.

“Getting Wyatt back has been a big difference and he is solid.”

From here on out, Beller and his teammates will enjoy the ride.

“A win like this showed how we can all play together,” said Beller. “If we can keep working together, we know we can compete with any team.”
