It’s been a long time coming for Bethlehem Catholic’s girls volleyball program taking home district hardware, but the Hawks became golden again last week when they swept Southern Lehigh 28-26, 25-19, 25-19 for the District 11 3A crown.
Becahi kept its undefeated mark on the season at 14-0, while registering their first district crown since 2014.
“It was really exciting and an awesome moment for this group of girls to finally win a district championship after six years,” said head coach Kelly Brown. “It is one to remember. They have worked extremely hard during the offseason to get to this point, and we are excited for the state tournament.”
Becahi opened the first round of the PIAA tournament on Tuesday against District 12 champion Cardinal O’Hara, which was past Press deadlines.
The last time Becahi won districts, they also won states, so maybe the program can go on a similar run this time around, and why not?
In last week’s district final, MacKenzy Ruggiero registered 12 kills, while Emma Maskiell added 21 assists. Kyleigh Brown led both teams with 29 digs, continuing Becahi’s dominance across the board this season, as they’ve only four games throughout the campaign.
Brown was just excited for her team to get into state play and see where the road ends.
“We are extremely excited to be able to reach this point in our season, especially with the uncertainty due to the global pandemic,” she said. “We are going to take it one game at a time. We do not know much about Cardinal O’Hara, but we are expecting great competition throughout the rest of the season.
“The keys to advance in states is for our team to be composed, play as a team, enjoy every moment, and give it all they got.”
