Bath Farmers Market leaders’ impulse and mission is to serve the community. On Oct. 23, volunteers held a scarecrow contest to raise funds for the borough’s firefighters.
Contest coordinator and Bath Borough Councilwoman Carol Bear-Heckman and contest helper Sharon Fournier counted the ballots and declared the winner - a scarecrow named Matilda, which gained nearly twice the votes of the two other scarecrow finalists, Ruth and Happy Hippy.
Matilda was named the grand champion, with Ruth the scarecrow nosing out Happy Hippy in a photo finish for second place.
Humorously, Matilda mentioned she is honored to win the contest but mostly prefers to be in a farmer’s field scaring away crows.
The donation amount was not immediately announced due to expected late donations and will be turned over to the firefighters.
Oct. 30 was the final day of the 2020 Bath Farmers Market season, which extended into October as compared to other years. The final day featured a costume party and Halloween celebration for trick-or-treaters of all ages.
