Two unbeaten football teams face of Friday

Three games into the shortened 2020 season, the Parkland High School football team has been able to shake off the rust of the offseason.

After defeating Whitehall and Dieruff in the opening two weeks, the Trojans took down Allen, 42-0 last Friday night in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference game at J. Birney Crum Stadium. Parkland remains undefeated at 3-0 ahead of its showdown with fellow unbeaten and rival Emmaus (4-0) on Friday night.

Over the last two weeks, the Trojans were able to run their offensive and defensive schemes with starters, while also resting them and allowing younger players to see the field in dispatching of the two Allentown public high schools.

Head coach Tim Moncman was pleased after his team’s latest victory.

“The offense seemed to eliminate some mistakes and execute at a high level,” said Moncman. “With now starting to get into a tougher stretch in our schedule, you have to play near flawless football and limit mistakes to have a chance to win. We were able to do that tonight.”

Parkland jumped out in front of the Canaries (0-4 overall) early and often in the first half. Senior running back Isiah Rico, who finished with six carries for 77 yards, scored twice. Junior quarterback Ty Tremba threw for two touchdowns, while adding 119 yards through the air. His scores were a 48-yarder to Luan Avdijaj and a 38-yard throw to Jordan Lewis. Freshman tailback Trey Tremba also found the end zone on a 61-yard scamper and finished with 105 yards on 10 carries on the ground.

Defensively, the Trojans were led by Peyton Marciniak, Marcus Loch and Jayden Sanchez, each who tallied two tackles and one sack. The unit also forced and recovered two fumbles.

Both sides of the football will have to be on top of their games if they want to walk off their home turf as victors on Friday, as the Green Hornets (4-0) also bring an explosive offense and defense. They have outscored their opponents 183-35. Emmaus is coming off a 38-28 win against Whitehall last weekend. Parkland defeated the Zephyrs 41-24 in its opener three weeks ago.

“They know it is a big game and an emotional game,” Moncman said. “They shouldn’t have any problem getting excited for a game like this.

“[Emmaus] is aggressive on defense and very fast. Offensively they have one of the best running backs in the league and if we do not tackle well we can be in trouble.”

Emmaus senior Brandon Camire has been the Hornets lead back for two straight seasons. Camire, who recorded four rushing touchdowns last Friday night in a win over Whitehall, has 14 total on the season. The Green Hornets start a sophomore at quarterback in Jake Fotta. He threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns against the Zephyrs.

The game Friday night at Parkland School District Stadium will decide the winner of the EPC Lehigh Division and a top-two seed in next week’s District 11 Class 6A tournament.
