NHS field hockey team ready for playoffs
Northampton head field hockey coach Carrie Saul initially thought her club would have played Easton in the District 11 Class 3A opening round Thursday.
The Konkrete Kids recently felt the bite from the Red Rover last season including a double-overtime defeat in districts. They gained revenge this season with a 2-1 victory after they dropped a matchup two days earlier by the identical score.
However, that loss proved to be their lone blemish on the season, as the Kids haven’t lost since Oct. 1. They finished the season with impressive 8-1 and 7-0 thumps of Bethlehem Catholic.
Instead of meeting Easton, the third-seeded Kids (8-1-1) hosted sixth-seeded Nazareth (7-4-1), who they dropped 5-1 before they endured a 0-0 tie.
Saul anticipated a productive regular season with a strong returning cast of nine seniors.
“We knew we could have a good season,” she said. “These girls are all selfless and really work well together. Against Easton, it came as a win at all cost for us. We wanted to get the monkey off our backs.
“I hope our kids are peaking, but they still can go higher. It will depend how well they can play.”
Heading into the postseason, Bri Sell leads the team in scoring with 14 goals and eight assists and Olivia Lorah has 12 goals and two assists.
Kadee Schrader and Sadie Decker have formed a productive duo in the nets all season for the Kids.
Saul also has been pleased with the recent contributions of Kenadee Carreras, Brooke Peters, and Maddy Siegfried.
Despite COVID-19 shifting the schedules, Saul believes her team has been seasoned for the next step. Ironically if the Kids advance, they will meet second-seeded Easton in the semifinals Nov. 4.
“We lost eight [scheduled] games,” she said. “But most of the teams are all in the same boat. The girls have worked very hard over the next few months, and they are excited. We know these teams and we have to be ready.”
