Bethlehem Derby Part 2 was arguably more charged than Part 1 when Freedom came in with a chip on its shoulder after losing to Liberty two days earlier.
“This one was special. We really wanted to beat them, Freedom-Liberty game, so, you know. We definitely showed up today, and we definitely put on a show,” said Freedom’s Sebastian Garces, who had a hat trick in the Patriots’ 4-1 victory last Wednesday night. “Even before the game, we were texting, saying that we were on it to win the game, show them what we had. After Monday, it was devastating, but we learned from it and came back hungrier.”
The Hurricanes struck first on a goal by Chris Matz.
“When they scored the goal, I mean, yes, I was kind of frustrated, but it was like, keep a level head and keep going at it,” said Freedom goalie Kyle Kimler.
Garces had two goals in the first half to put the Pates ahead, but it was his third one that may have meant the most.
“The second one was a good ball from Peter Tichy and I chipped the goalie, and my third one was the one that my dad and my brother were telling me all day to shoot the ball and it worked,” Garces said. “I think [Liberty was] trying to take me and Peter out of the game, but we played better than what we did on Monday, and we were moving it around better.”
It was with 11:07 remaining in regulation that Garces took the third shot and put the game away.
“This is our season and we’ve got to put a good effort in,” said Kimler. “I’m fired up. I’m glad we won.”
