LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

FHS girls down LHS

As fog rolled on and off the turf at BASD Stadium last Wednesday night, Freedom and Liberty’s girls’ soccer teams fought through the heavy mist in the last game of the city rivalry series.

“It was so foggy, the ball just skipped sometimes,” said Hurricane goalie Sophia Albino.

Albino had some big saves in Wednesday’s game as well as last Monday’s, also against the Patriots, but Freedom clinched the victory, 2-0.

“They were able to split us a bit more come the second half between our center backs and our outside backs; also, our line between our defense and our midfield that ultimately doomed us a couple times there,” said Hurricane coach Andrew Uhler. “Liberty Freedom is always a bit cagey, and they just happened to come out that day.”

Freedom senior Haley Gschrey scored the first goal with 13:30 remaining in the second half, and Natalia Triscari scored the second with 4:31 left in the game.

“Well, I saw an open ball, and I thought I’d run onto it and I had it,” Triscari said. “We were way more confident going into this game. We couldn’t play as many through balls and had to play some higher balls. Being from the same city, it’s exciting and reputation-building.”

It was the second to last game of the season for Freedom; the last for Liberty.

“I can always get them next year,” said Albino. “I love having my last game with my girls, but it was a fun time.”

Liberty, along with the rest of the EPC, fought through coronavirus constraints to have a season at all.

“We didn’t start off the way we wanted to but all we did was continue to improve from the beginning to the end. We played, frankly, five tough teams, and we got all of our money’s worth out of the season,” Coach Uhler said. “Lots to learn and build from.”
