EHS field hockey team goes 10-0

Once again the Emmaus High School field hockey team finished the regular season with an unblemished record. The Green Hornets (10-0 overall, 8-0 EPC) shutout rival Parkland 6-0 last Friday afternoon in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference regular season finale at Parkland High School.

Senior Annika Herbine netted a hat trick for Emmaus, and Madison Bruns, Alexis Kociban and Abby Burnett each tallied a goal as the Green Hornets earned the number one seed in this week’s District 11 3A Tournament.

“It’s good to get that win to end the season and give you momentum going into the postseason,” junior defender Kyleigh Faust said. “We have a positive energy about us and want to keep winning to make sure our seniors go out on top. That is our main motivation to keep going.”

It was the second straight win over Parkland after Emmaus beat the Trojans by a score of 8-1 three days prior. Faust was the anchor for the Emmaus defense that recorded its eighth scoreless game of the year, allowing just two all season, one of which came against the Trojans last Tuesday night.

“I think we talked more as a team overall,” said Faust. “We made sure that every girl was marked and no one was open. We just executed well on defense and really wanted that shutout to end the season.”

Herbine was hard to guard when she had the ball at her stick. She broke through twice in a 6:52 span in the opening quarter to stake Emmaus to a 2-0 lead. Bruns and Kociban both added goals in the second and third quarters respectively, and then Herbine and Burnett capped the Emmaus scoring with two goals in the fourth.

Burnett, Herbine, Kociban, Mackenzie Bruns and Brooke Mancini each contributed an assist in the win.

It’s been a unique year for all team, including Emmaus, but the Green Hornets, like most others, are grateful to be able to play and are remaining diligent in how they go about playing.

“It’s been nice to be able to play some games this year,” said Faust. “There have been some ups and downs and it’s been challenging at times, but we’ve stuck together through it. We’ve kept our energy level up and are playing together as a team to continue to win games and play until the end.”

Senior Bailey Tietz finished with three saves to earn the victory in the cage.

Emmaus hosts the eighth seed, Whitehall, in the district quarterfinals on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Memorial Field.
