Cox takes second at state golf tourney

Three Emmaus golfers competed in the PIAA Class 3A State Championships last week.

Emmaus senior Michelle Cox had her best finish in three trips to the state championships, held annually at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Cox shot even-par 72 to tie for first place before taking the silver medal after West Chester East’s Victoria Kim won the tournament on the first hole of a playoff.

A three-time East Penn Conference champ and two-time District 11 champ who is headed to Penn State, Cox made five birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey during her state championship round. This year the state championship was condensed to one round. Traditionally it is a two-day, 36-hole event but it was abbreviated this year because of coronavirus concerns.

Evelyn Wong, an Emmaus golf team junior who won this year’s District 11 tournament, took fourth place in last week’s girls state tournament.

Wong shot 75 with two birdies, three bogeys and one double-bogey.

Hornet junior Matt Zerfass also made his second trip to the state championship meet. He shot 7-over par 78 to finish tied for 28th place in the boys tournament. Zerfass made two birdies, five bogeys and a pair of double bogeys in his state championship round.

Calen Sanderson of Holy Ghost Prep won this year’s boys state title with a round of 4-under par 67, one stroke better than Chuck Tragesser of Franklin Regional.
