Substance use disorder and recovery-‘Steps for Recovery’ virtual event seeks to raise awarness

Kolbe Academy hosts “Steps for Recovery” Virtual Walk/Run to spread awareness and understanding of substance use disorder and recovery.

From Oct. 23-31 Kolbe Academy is hosting its first annual “Steps for Recovery” walk/run event. This is a virtual event designed to spread awareness and understanding of substance use disorder and recovery, and to benefit Kolbe Academy, a non-profit recovery high school located in Bethlehem.

“Steps for Recovery is for a great cause,” said Kolbe student and event committee representative, Gabe Shellock who openly shares his story of recovery to help other high school students faced with the challenges that come with substance use disorder. “We all love the school. It’s really helping. We’re going to be participating and doing our best to raise awareness so for any of those that want to participate, absolutely feel free to join. I am sure that you’ll love it and feel great for it.”

“We love our school very much,” agreed Pete, Kolbe’s newest student. “I’m pretty sure our school has saved both of our lives and we would like to do a great thing and raise awareness of addiction around the world.”

The event will be held during the last week of October in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, a national week focused on living drug-free and honoring the memory of all who have lost their lives in the fight against drugs. There is no distance or pace requirement. Participants may join from anywhere, at any pace, and go any distance during the event week. Registration is $25 for adults, and $10 for children 18 and under. All will receive a commemorative T-shirt, sticker, and a digital bib which features the participant number and team name, if applicable.
