Parkland finds groove in 49-0 win over Dieruff
The Parkland High School football team played its most complete game of the 2020 season last Friday night. The Trojans (2-0 overall) jumped out in front of Dieruff (0-3) early and kept the Huskies quiet as they blanked Dieruff 49-0 in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference game at J. Birney Crum stadium. It was the first shutout of the season for Parkland, which completed its second game of the year, one week after opening the season with a victory over Whitehall.
Parkland scored touchdowns on each of its five offensive possessions in the first half, and even returned a punt for a touchdown to round out the first half scoring.
The offense was led by junior quarterback Ty Tremba, senior running back Isiah Rico and senior wide receiver JT Siggins. The trio had its hands in all five of the offensive touchdowns in the first half.
“It’s great to go out and lead the guys again,” said Tremba. “The team has been making some big strides on the field. I’m excited to see what we can do. Every game we do whatever it takes to win. It starts with a great week of practice. Every week is playoff week mentality for us.”
With Parkland being forced to start their season late (one of the last in District 11 to play), the Trojans players and coaches treat every game like a playoff game, like it could be their last this season.
And that mindset showed from the opening kick.
After stopping the Huskies on an attempted fake punt, the Trojans put together an 11-play, 57-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard scoring run by Rico. Rico then added his second touchdown of the night on the ensuing possession, this time from 31 yards out for a 14-0 lead late in the opening quarter. Tremba then completed touchdown passes to Siggins (23 yards), Luan Avidjaj (62 yards) and Nakhi Bullock (33 yards) all in the second quarter.
“The offense is really doing well,” said Tremba. “With the ball in Rico’s hands special things happen. Also, the line has been doing a great job so far this year, huge credit to them. The receivers are doing an amazing job getting open and making my job easier.”
Avidjaj took a Dieruff punt back 47 yards and Parkland went into the locker room ahead 40-0 at halftime.
Rico recorded 72 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Tremba completed 5-of-9 passes for 157 yards and three scores, while adding 32 rush yards. Siggins caught three balls for 62 yards and a touchdown.
Garrett Fitzgerald finished with two sacks for the Trojans defense.
Head coach Tim Moncman was able to play the majority of his roster throughout the game, and that included freshman running back Trey Tremba, who ended up finding pay dirt himself.
“Seeing my brother get some varsity time as a freshman made me really proud,” Tremba said. “He’s a really hard worker and he deserves it.”
Parkland is back at J. Birney Crum Stadium this Friday night when it takes on Allen.
