Liberty wins silver
The Liberty Hurricanes were awarded silver medals at the District XI Team Tennis Championship after Southern Lehigh won the final, 3-0, to become gold medal district champs on Saturday at Southern Lehigh.
“The happiest thing for me is to get them the opportunity to showcase their talent and be able to feel accomplished for that,” said Liberty coach Chris Conrad.
Veronica Lynn was into her second set and winning, 7-5, 2-0, when the match was stopped because Southern Lehigh had already won three of the five matches.
“I just kind of kept thinking, I got this. It’s on me. I had to keep telling myself to keep up with her pace. I could have pulled it out,” Lynn said.
Angie Ronca lost at two singles to Michelle Li, 0-6, 1-6, and Margeaux Donchez lost to Erica Wang, 0-6, 1-6.
In doubles, Sruti Tekumalla and Sofia Horstmann lost to Kayla Lebby and Kaitlyn Howie, 3-6, 1-6.
Hermani Patel and Elise Kney were about to begin their doubles match but never got started.
Coach Conrad presented the silver medals to his team.
“This is a huge accomplishment, and it’s awesome because this is my first class here, my first four years of coaching I’ve had Angie and Margeaux start with me and end with me, and at the same time, have a season where we were below .500 the first year, and we constantly improved. Then, we got to this position their senior year and it’s really special. That was pretty cool,” he said.
“Veronica, I had a feeling she was going to end up winning that match, and I think our second doubles would have been really close, so the score, although it was 3-0, could have been 3-2 by the end, so it’s always nice to know we were right there with them.”
Lynn and Donchez will now pair up to compete in the District XI Doubles Tournament this week.
