BC tops FHS; Field hockey looks for wins

Bethlehem Catholic’s volleyball team looks to finish the regular season undefeated when they take on Northampton Wednesday night in the final game of this shortened season.

The Hawks (11-0) have only lost four games all season and the pace they’ve hit is something that head coach Kelly Brown is ecstatic about.

“In the beginning of the season, I had really high hopes for them and they are proving me right,” said Brown. “We are extremely pleased with how the girls have been playing this season. They have come together as a team and have been performing very well. They have a very close bond on and off the court.”

Two of the highlighted wins for the Hawks came last week when they swept a previously undefeated Freedom (7-2) team in both of their matchups. Now with no league playoffs on the horizon, the Hawks will prepare for the District 11 postseason, which is scheduled to start on October 27.

“The team is very competitive when we play any team, but they were very satisfied being able to beat an undefeated Freedom team,” Brown said. “We have been performing very well in the regular season, so we are expecting the girls to keep the momentum going into the postseason.”

Freedom bounced back from there losses to Becahi to sweep Liberty (5-4) on Monday, as they close out the regular season Wednesday night as well. No matter what Wednesday’s results are, both teams will be locked in to the district postseason next week as well.

While all three Bethlehem teams will be heading to the postseason in volleyball, all three teams in field hockey will probably fall short on extending their seasons.

Liberty (2-6) and Freedom (1-7) wrap up their regular season slates this week with a rivalry clash, while Bethlehem Catholic (1-7) closes with a series against a top-tier Northampton (6-1-1) squad.

Falling short of the postseason is something Liberty head coach Jill Dorn laments about.

“Optimistically, we worked to transition players who by experience had less time in varsity situations and we learned from it all,” Dorn said. “It was a good year and a great group to do this with because we lost varsity personnel in key roles from last season and placed young players with less varsity experience onto the field this season.”
