During a Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners meeting held virtually Oct. 12, commissioners discussed renovations for the Mickley-Prydun Farmstead, 3540 Ruch St., Hokendauqua.
Commissioners in favor of renovating the property cited its historical significance as grounds for preservation. From that discussion, it was mistakenly reported the property was once the home of John Jacob Mickley Jr., who moved the Liberty Bell from Philadelphia to Allentown during the Revolutionary War to protect it from the British.
The original stone home on the Mickley-Prydun Farm was built by John Jacob Mickley Jr.’s son, Christian Mickley, but John Jacob Mickley Jr. never lived there himself. Christian Mickley’s son, Peter Mickley, would later build a larger farmhouse near that building. Both structures still stand to this day.
The actual home of John Jacob Mickley Jr. sits on a 41-acre property at 4590 Spring St., Egypt. The log cabin at that address was built by John Jacob Mickley Sr. in 1752 and became his son’s home after his death in 1769.
