Hornets visit ACC Saturday

After dismissing its first two opponents by a combined 121-0, the Emmaus football team faces Allentown’s final entry Saturday for the 2020 season’s first road game.

Coach Tim McGorry’s Allentown Central Catholic Vikings (2-1) should present a sterner challenge than week one and two.

“They are an outstanding football team,” said Emmaus coach Harold Fairclough. “..They have been executing at a high level so far.”

The Vikings came into the 2020 campaign looking to build off a 2019 season when they played for the District 11 Class 4A championship.

To have a good year, Central must run the football. The offensive line, considered a question mark this summer, through three games has played well at times, but has yet to consistently distinguish itself.

Evidence of that has been the performance of running back Jayden Williams. In the Vikes’ opener against Whitehall, Williams carried the ball 23 times for 207 yards and scored a 60-yard touchdown on a nifty run. Against Nazareth the next week, Williams was shutdown, gaining a humbling 11 yards on 13 carries. Fullback LeRoy Johnson helps Williams run a ball-control offense.

“They’re a physical football team with Williams and Johnson,” Fairclough said

The passing attack is predicated off the run and is effectively utilized in McGorry’s scheme. Senior quarterback Matt Rauscher is sound and usually doesn’t make mistakes. His top target is wide receiver Jack McGorry, who caught nine balls for 135 yards against the Blue Eagles in week two.

Central Catholic’s defense is at its best when the Vikes play with a controlled aggression. Mental mistakes cost the Vikes periodically, but they are capable unit. John Fifield anchors the defensive line, while Mason Maxism and Johnson lower the boom at linebacker. Special teams haven’t been all that special so far. A botched snap during a punt turned the game in the Nazareth loss. Still, overall, they block and tackle well, a sign of a sound fundamental unit.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday Night at J. Birney Crum Stadium.
