Michael Vital played a vital part Monday afternoon to help extend Liberty’s magical golf season this fall. Like it has been all season, he had plenty of help from his teammates.
Vital fired a 72 to lead the pack of 16 Class 3A District 11 qualifiers at Olde Homestead Golf Course in New Tripoli. They will advance to the district tournament Wednesday at the Steel Club in Hellertown.
“I was just trying to make pars and have a good day,” said the sophomore, whose overall golf is to advance to the state tournament at York’s Heritage Hills.
Vital was joined by teammates sophomores Jimmy Barker and Ryan Evans, who both finished seventh with an 80; and freshman Jase Barker, who finished 13th with an 81. Matt, his twin brother, and senior Jordan Barker were automatic qualifiers. Liberty also qualified as a team.
The Hurricanes swept through the East Penn Conference (EPC) with an undefeated, 10-0 record this fall, a first for the program.
Head coach Steve Bradley and his team has been enjoying the ride. Jordan Barker returned to he team after he spent the previous two years in Florida.
“This is a first for the program,” he said. “The kids really worked hard and they are very excited.
We beat Emmaus at Emmaus and that was a huge task. They didn’t have their best player, but we still had to work through it.
“They are all playing well right now at the right time.”
Freedom freshmen Matt Ronca finished eighth with an 80, and teammate Krish Patel was just out of the running with a 19th-place finish with an 85.
Northampton’s Madison Salter finished second in the girls’ division with a 94 and Whitehall’s Kristine Salter was fourth with a 100 to qualify for the next round.
