Large Flowerheads concert delights Ontelaunee Park audience

The music was all about “groovin’ on a Sunday afternoon” when the Large Flowerheads staged a three-hour concert at Ontelaunee Park.

The group performed upbeat numbers from the ’60s and ’70s that included “I’ve Got You Babe,” “Painted Black,” “Nowhere Man” and “California Dreamin’.

Folks clustered in groups under cloudy skies, chatting and forgetting their woes amid the COVID-19 pandemic as the group played fan favorites from better days.

People gathered with family and friends, while others tucked themselves a little further afield on the spacious lawn in front of the stage.

Some, donning tie-dyed shirts, and shorts, danced in front of the stage while others bounced to the beat in chairs they had brought from home.

Locally, the Large Flowerheads are a perennial favorite, so it’s no surprise some fans traveled to the park just to see them play.

Kelsey Werley, who drove from Quakertown, sat with a group of 10 or more to see the band.

“My grandmother, Toot Brack, has been following the band for years,” she said. “It’s her birthday today, so we surprised her with a visit.”

The group has performed at venues throughout the Valley, including Musikfest Café, Penn’s Peak and the Sellersville Theater, and at local fairs throughout the region, including Musikfest.

“I love the Large Flowerheads,” piped up Werley’s 7-year old niece Miley.

“They’re so good.”

Meantime, Tanya Werley passed around a tray of homebaked goods she had made to celebrate her mother’s birthday to perfect strangers.

The Large Flowerheads have opened for national and international groups such as the 5th Dimension, The Guess Who and Paul Revere and the Raiders.

By midafternoon the sun was still struggling to break through the clouds but the crowd was still groovin’ and even though it wasn’t a “hot time, summer in the city,” by all appearances, a good time was had by all.
