In the first city rivalry matches of the high school soccer season, Bethlehem Catholic and Liberty faced off twice last week.
“It’s pretty weird,” said Liberty senior Chris Matz. “We never played anything like this, so we’re trying to do the best we can. I’m happy we’re having a season at least because I wasn’t sure at the beginning of the year we’d be having anything.”
The Hurricanes won the first contest, 2-0, at Liberty.
“It was great-my first goal as a freshman, first goal at Liberty, first goal on varsity,” said Josh Lee, who put the Hurricanes on the scoreboard in the first half.
“Our center defensive mid, Josh Lee, the other Josh Lee, took a shot, I was in the right place at the right time, and I finished it.”
Matz scored the second goal early in the second half when Jordan Jupina’s free kick hit the crossbar.
“I was following it, making sure I got there first. The goalie dove for the shot so I knew all I had to do was hit it on target,” said Matz.
The second contest between the Hurricanes and the Hawks ended in a 1-1 tie at Bethlehem Catholic.
Becahi’s Matthew Yusella scored on an assist by Anthony Barczynski, and Jackson Gilstrap made 14 saves. Statistics were unavailable for Liberty.
