The Northampton girls volleyball team reached the halfway point of their season on Tuesday, dropping a four-set decision to Liberty, 25-21, 20-25, 18-25, 16-25. The K-Kids’ record is 2-3, which puts them in fourth place in the EPC Northampton Division.
Northampton trailed 9-15 in the first set before rallying to capture it.
In the second set, they fell behind early 5-12, got the score back to 14-15, but could not sustain the momentum.
The third set saw another early deficit, this time 5-11, but the K-Kids never got closer than 4 points.
The final set was tied at 11-11, but the Hurricanes gradually built the lead and finished off the match with a 5-point run.
The team struggled with their serve-receive all night, which didn’t allow Northampton to run its offense and attack the ball near the net.
Senior captain Lindsey Nemeth assessed the team’s performance.
“I think we have a lot of young girls and we need to work on playing together and playing as a unit,” she said. “We’ve come a long way, but we still have a lot of work to do.”
Last week, the K-Kids chalked up their first wins of the season by sweeping Easton. On Thursday, they won in four sets 25-18, 21-25, 26-24, 25-14. On Saturday, they took the match in straight sets 25-10, 25-16, 25-19.
Nemeth stressed the importance of getting those first two wins of the season.
“We have a lot of underclassmen who are new to varsity and the nerves were in the way,” she said. “Once we got a win, once we got on our feet, the energy really started to go and we played as a team.”
Next up for Northampton is the rematch with Liberty in Bethlehem Thursday night. They then travel to Nazareth on Tuesday to face a Blue Eagles team that split their series with Liberty and were swept by Freedom.
