Girls drop two to Easton

The Northampton girls soccer team played their first game of the season last Thursday under the lights at Al Erdosy stadium looking to celebrate Senior Night against the team they had knocked out of districts on the same field last year, Easton.

However, the Red Rovers spoiled the mood and got their revenge with physical a 5-1 win that left the K-Kids battered and looking for answers.

Easton scored one minute into the game on a textbook header off a corner kick.

It looked like Northampton had tied the game at the 30-minute mark when Isabella Nota’s free kick hit the underside of the crossbar and caromed down and pulled the goalie over the goal line with the ball. However, the referee ruled no goal and play continued with the K-Kids trailing 1-0.

Five minutes later, Northampton drew another free kick when the Easton goalie covered the ball outside the box, but the kick sailed harmlessly wide.

The Rovers’ offensive pressure finally broke through again with 5 minutes left in the first half to give Easton a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

Any realistic hopes of a comeback died when Easton netted its third goal three minutes into the second half.

Raine Korpics scored the lone Northampton goal on a penalty shot with 13:42 left in the game that made the score 4-1.

Head coach Michael Missmer noted, “We seemed out of sorts. Credit to them, their defenders did a really good job. It seemed like we weren’t connecting. We played well in moments, but in the moments we didn’t play well, Easton took advantage of that.”

Two days later, Easton completed the regular season sweep with a 4-0 win on their home turf.

Missmer commented, “Last year we didn’t lose any game by more than two goals and this year we’ve been outscored 9-1. We have basically the same team and we’re not getting it done. That’s on me. I have to figure this out.”

The team’s game against Liberty on Wednesday occurred too late to make it into this edition.

Northampton’s next game is Saturday afternoon when they host Nazareth at 2 p.m. The Blue Eagles are last year’s district runners up and sport a 5-0 record and a 35-2 goal differential on the season.

The return match against the Hurricanes will be played on Monday.
