Coplay council discusses holiday alternatives

Coplay Borough Council spent much of its Oct. 6 workshop meeting discussing the September vote to cancel the annual trick-or-treat night.

Coplay was one of the first municipalities to cancel trick or treat. Many local municipalities are still holding it. A resident sent an email to council asking the members to reinstate the event. Councilman Richard Kern asked if the decision to cancel trick or treat was a done deal, implying council could revote.

Councilman Charles Sodl noted council made a decision in September based on scientific data and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations to cancel trick or treat. Along with Sodl, council members Mark Molitoris, Stephen Burker and Janet Eisenhauer opposed having trick or treat.

“If you want to have your porch light on, so be it. We don’t sanction it,” Councilman Carl Luckenbach said.

Council President Louis Bodish floated the idea of holding a drive-up trick or treat at the borough’s Community Plaza, located at Second and Chestnut streets.

The discussion concluded with neither a drive-up nor traditional trick or treat approved.

Building Code Officer Ronald Helman asked council to consider a fire ordinance. No details were provided. The draft ordinance is being reviewed by the borough solicitor’s office. After that review, the ordinance will be provided to council for discussion and possible action.

Coplay Police Chief Vincent Genovese reported there were 234 incidents, 18 citations and 18 parking tickets issued during September. There were three arrests for driving under the influence, a disorderly conduct and a drug offense.

Genovese also reported the department received a $250 donation from the Balliet Stadium Inc. organization.

The fire department report from Chief Brandon Bechtel indicated there were eight incidents during September, including two mutual aid responses to Whitehall and one house fire. The department also added one new member.

Council agreed to donate $500 to the Coplay Lions Club in recognition of its distinguished activities serving Coplay and also $500 to Meals on Wheels, which is nationally recognized for its important work.

Kern told council support is needed to pursue grant funding for replacement playground equipment for Saylor Park and for the tot lot on Fifth Street. More information is forthcoming.

Council is planning for the purchase of a new garbage truck, with a price tag of $246,288. It is expected to be delivered possibly in February 2021.

Public works is planning to pave some street patches on Chestnut, Second and Ruch streets.

The next meeting of Coplay Borough Council is Oct. 13. It is a virtual meeting. See the Coplay newsletter or contact the borough office for the access number and code.
