‘No Tony and No Tapas’ Civic Theatre fund-raiser

Would you like to have a meeting with Tony Award-winner Joe Mantello, who has directed Broadway shows “Wicked “ and “Assassins;” or a costume class with Michael McDonald, nominated for a Tony Award for his designs on Broadway’s revival of ”Hair?”

It’s not too late to bid on these once-in-a-lifetime experiences, as well as many other great items in Civic Theatre of Allentown’s “No Tonys and No Tapas,” a virtual performance and online auction that continued through Oct. 1.

When the coronavirus (COVID-10) pandemic forced cancellation of Civic’s biggest fund-raiser, “Tonys and Tapas” gala in June, the West End Allentown theater’s officials decided to take the event online.

Civic posted a recording of a performance by 14 Civic Theatre Company members singing Broadway and off-Broadway favorites, which was online through Oct. 1.

“We have a wonderful group of performers including familiar faces and some surprises,” says Diane Donaher, who was named Civic’s administrative director in August. “The auction includes unique items from music lessons to a virtual cooking class. Everyone can watch the performers and bid on the auction.”

The online events are free but viewers can donate online as they watch.

The performers include Nina Ace, Daniel Eli Becker, Veronica Bocian, Tracy Ceschin, Brian Foley, Melisa Klausner, Deena Linn, Jadyn Lynah, Will Morris, Adam Newborn, Kathleen Oswalt, Kate Pistone, Anthony Rizzuto and Juanita Shockley.

Auction items include an acting class or monologue coaching session with Kathleen Oswalt and Will Morris, Civic Associate Artistic Director and Production Manager; Zoom “cocktails” with Civic Artistic Director William Sanders and two-time Tony winner Joe Mantello; a 30-minute interaction with a professional member from a Broadway show such as “The Lion King” or “Come from Away;” two upper mezzanine tickets to the 2021 Tony Awards in New York City; Zoom costume class-discussion with Tony nominee and Civic Theatre alumnus Michael McDonald, and an “Ultimate Broadway Package” with a private meet and greet with two cast members at a pre-show dinner, two mezzanine tickets to your choice of Broadway show and in-theater meet and greet with a cast member following the show.

There also will be baskets of items, artwork and more to bid on.

Star of the Day outdoor concert:

Star of the Day Productions, headed by managing artistic director Kirsten Almeida, had to press the pause button in Marchon all productions in the theater’s space at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Emmaus.

The company’s board has been working tirelessly to come up with ways to create theater amidst the continuing pandemic.

“We are excited to offer some really cool ways to stay connected to the arts through Star of the Day,” Almeida says.

Star of the Day, which has presented online workshops and cabarets during the summer, goes live with “Cabaret Under The Stars,” 7 p.m. Oct. 3, Macungie Memorial Park, 50 Poplar St., Macungie. The evening’s festivities begin at 5 p.m. with activities to get to know the community theater.

“The concert will feature some of the area’s dynamic performers singing everything from pop to opera and everything in between,” Almeida says.

The performance will follow CDC safety guidelines. Patrons and performers are to wear face masks throughout the performance. Seating will be social distanced.

“The arts have been severely impacted by Covid-19 and everyone’s cooperation will result in a successful event,” Almeida says.
