Presbyterian Church of Catasauqua, 210 Pine St., “is not closed. It is alive and well,” reported Janet Dorwart, the church clerk of session.
The clerk of session is the person who takes minutes for the session and maintains all the church’s ledgers of membership, births, baptisms, deaths and elders. The session is defined as a body of elected elders governing each local church within the Presbyterian polity.
“We have held services outside, had AA meetings outside, outside musical concerts, and we’ve helped the (Catasauqua Community) Food Bank,” relayed Dorwart.
She noted members also recently held a drive-thru voter registration effort.
“We are very connected to the community,” she said.
Indoor services have been suspended since March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of a high number of elderly members, church leaders stopped indoor services for members’ safety. Dorwart said there are talks of possibly reopening the church for indoor services as early as January 2021.
A challenge the church currently has is the lack of a pastor. They have used ministers from the Presbyterian minister pool for services.
Dorwart is confident the church will return and “be bigger and better than ever before” after its full reopening.
In a recent Catasauqua Press edition, it was erroneously reported Presbyterian Church of Catasauqua was closed. The Press regrets the error.
