Zephs opens with Central
Whitehall won’t necessary measure its success this year on wins and losses after a winless 0-10 season last year, but the Zephyrs will look to establish their identity and show their mettle.
“It has been exciting,” said second-year head coach Matt Senneca. “We’re still a long way from where we want to be. It’s going to take some time and effort on our part as a coaching staff and the players.
“But we are all very happy about this group and how they have grown and worked over the past couple of months.”
Senneca will bring 10 starters back from last year’s unit, paced by the senior backfield of Angelo Daddona and Zack Hartman. Juniors Damonte Freeman and Michael Hernandez also should see time running the ball. Junior Michael Gallo and sophomore Nigel Linton should be in the mix.
Hartman, who suffered an ACL injury his sophomore year, realizes that his team was in many games last year, and see how it has further motivated them.
“We were right there in many games,” said Hartman. “We just didn’t put it together for four quarters. We have had a very good chemistry and have been working hard. We just have to stay focused and keep working well together.
“We believe we can put it all together this year.”
The Zephyrs will need to solidify their front line behind senior Issac Moore-Ogola and juniors Brayden Marrero and Aiden Tacker. Junior Anthony Saed and sophomores Logan Headman, Carter Hudak, and Ray Jackson impressed in camp.
Junior Quinn Wentling is back at quarterback, and he has a large contingent of seniors like Anthony Sabbagh and Stephen Fame along with juniors like Tommy Buskirk, Bryce Bashore, Jayden Lee, Ryan Kovalchick and Devin Donatelli.
Senior Connor Fenstermaker will handle the kicking duties.
“Our biggest area we are replacing people is on the offensive and defensive lines,” said Senneca. “We need to find a group of guys to hold those spots down and fill in the gaps left from the seniors last year graduating.”
The Zephyrs, who will have seven games on their schedule, open their season at home Friday against Allentown Central Catholic, which is coming off an 8-5 season and a runner-up finish in the District 11 Class 4A title game last season. The Vikings are expected to be one of the East Penn Conference favorite this season.
“They are experienced and well balanced on offense between their run and pass threats,” said Senneca about Central Catholic.
