More pickleball courts planned for Salisbury parks

Additional pickleball courts are planned to meet demand in Salisbury Township.

Plans are to re-stripe the upper basketball court at Green Acres so it can be used as a pickleball court.

There are also plans to re-stripe a tennis court at Laubach Park so it can be used as a pickleball court.

Pickleball has become increasingly popular in the township following the construction of pickleball courts as part of the Lindberg Park renovation.

Salisbury Township Manager Cathy Bonaskiewich said township residents have said to her, “We would like to see more pickleball courts.”

“Remember when they laughed when you said people want pickleball?” Salisbury Township Board of Commissioners President Debra Brinton asked Salisbury Township Recreation Director Genny Baillie.

“You can give all the credit for pickleball to Frank McCullough because he was all for that before the master plan, plus he favored a walking trail,” Baillie said.

Township Commissioner Alok Patnaik said residents had approached him with concerns about pickleball courts.

Baillie said an 8-foot fence was erected at Lindberg Park.

“We certainly would follow those same guidelines,” Baillie said.

The work is expected to be completed within weeks.

“If it turns out we have to put up a fence for the pickleball court, so be it,” Brinton said.

“The upper basketball court at Green Acres is not playable because of a big crack,” Baillie said.

Baillie thanked the commissioners’ for promulgating the policy of no new permits for sports in the park because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“I continue to get requests for permits. I turned one down yesterday. I am glad to say I am supported by the commissioners,” Baillie said, adding she also had “some concerns about protocol” in the use of park facilities.

“I think it’s time we look at some of the parks on the east side of town,” Brinton said.
