Macungie Halloween parade canceled; trick or treating on for Oct. 31

During the Sept. 8 Macungie Borough Council Zoom meeting, updates on storm damage to bridges were discussed as well as other borough storm damage.

The Hickory Street bridge is damaged and not repairable. The bridge is not considered safe. Repairs are in the process of being made to restore use to the area and replace the bridge.

The Cotton Street bridge had damage as stream water flowed up against the new concrete structure for the pedestrian portion. It was a $4,500 cost for the permit. Repairs to the bridge will cost about $25,000. The rainy day fund will be the source for these costs.

The Lehigh Street bridge was also mentioned. It is not known who is responsible for this bridge. If it is a 20-foot span, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will inspect it.

With discussions continuing over storm damage, council is recommending preparing a list to help decide on funds available and severity of problems.

The streetlights along Main Street have been turned on. Some are not on as of yet so no payment will be made to Mohawk until the job is completed.

The new hairdresser is paying rent to the borough now and a security deposit has been paid. Sonia Spotts will open her new salon soon. The Church Street Americans with Disabilities ramps are near completion.

The Main Street Commons development is moving along. Weis has begun construction.

Macungie Borough Councilwoman Roseann Schleicher met with Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners President Ron Beitler regarding stormwater problems. These developments are being watched. There have been horrible storms but the water issue has not been monitored closely enough.

The zoning officer is reminding borough residents about weeds, grass and vegetation overgrowth. Notices will be posted on the residents’ door if necessary.

The sidewalk installation is being considered. A permit is in process. The width of the sidewalk is being pared dow to 4 feet instead of 5 feet.

The new intern is doing well as she works with Administrative Assistant Selma Ritter and Borough Manager Bob Glisson. The intern is a college graduate with a degree in museum curation.

Macungie’s Halloween Parade has been canceled due to COVID-19. Trick or treating is still on schedule for Oct. 31.

There was a successful painting event Aug. 30 with the Macungie police.

There was an executive session after the council meeting to discuss personnel issues and legal matters.
