Tennis looking to rebuild

Northampton girls’ tennis head coach Kim Davis didn’t mince his words about the prospects of his team this fall.

With the loss of nine seniors from last year’s 9-9 squad, the outlook was expected.

“We’re rebuilding,” said Davis. “We also lost a freshman who moved out of the area. We’re just looking to improve right now.”

The Konkrete Kids lost their opening match to Freedom, 7-0, but it still proved to be a productive day.

“Between the two of us, we played 36 kids that day,” said Davis. “It was good to have a lot of kids involved. We played well.”

Morgan Heffelfinger is the lone senior on the team, and she will play on one of the doubles’ teams.

“She is an excellent leader,” said Davis about Heffelfinger. “She is a great player to have.”

Junior Caitlyn Stoudt, who played number three singles last year, has begun the year at number one singles. Fellow junior Abby Beil has started at number two and will battle for the number one spot.

Emma Whitman, another junior, is the number three singles player.

Junior Caroline Gray and sophomore Rachel Zeitner are the number two doubles team, and junior Olivia Tepes and Bella Aguanno comprise the number three team.

“Our top three singles and our number two doubles team will be battling for spots throughout the season,” said Davis. “They all will challenge each other.”

With the current COVID situation, Davis took a unique offseason approach.

“For the first time in over 20 years, we got together every Wednesday,” he stated. “We just got together to hit, nothing else. The girls have been very careful, and they have been wearing masks.

“We have been putting safety first. We have been going about and doing what we are supposed to do.”

The Kids will play 10 matches overall, home and away with Bethlehem Catholic, Freedom, Liberty and Nazareth. There won’t be a league tournament, but districts are still on the table.

“I don’t know how many matches we will win this year,” added Davis. “The girls work hard and compete. We have a good group of girls.”
