Local Scout earns Eagle rank

Justin Hilbert received the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor ceremony recently at Macungie Memorial Park.

Hilbert is a member of Boy Scout Troop 71, which is sponsored by Solomon’s United Church of Christ in Macungie.

Justin, son of Charles and Wendy Hilbert, joined Cub Scouts as a Tiger Scout and continued to progress in rank, earning his Heavy Shoulder Award and his Arrow of Light in 2013.

Justin crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 71 in March 2013 and served in various leadership positions, including Troop guide, patrol leader and assistant senior patrol leader.

Justin also completed the Boy Scouts of America’s National Youth Leadership Training.

Justin is a member of the National Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honor Society made up of Scouts elected by their fellow peers. Justin also earned 23 merit badges. He also attended several summer camps.

The Eagle Scout project was to build nine native bird nesting boxes and two bat nesting boxes along the walking trail at Jasper Park in Upper Milford Township. The bird boxes were mounted on trees or posts and the bat boxes were mounted on a pole. Along with the boxes, Justin researched the birds and created informational learning signs to be displayed near each of the different nesting boxes giving a brief description about their features and nesting time frames.

Justin earned his Eagle Scout rank Feb. 9.

Justin graduated from Emmaus High School in June. He plans to become an EMT and later pursue nursing.
