Liberty girls tennis returns top players

Liberty’s girls’ tennis team has its top four players back and outside of that part of the Hurricanes’ lineup, all are brand-new.

Liberty’s singles players are a string of seniors: Veronica Lynn at number one, Angie Ronca at number two, and Margeaux Donchez at number three.

All are returning to their same positions from last year.

“I expect Veronica to be the top player outside of the girl from Stroudsburg (Paras Briegel),” said Liberty coach Chris Conrad.

Sophomore Trudi Tekumalla is also returning to two doubles, but, as of before the season, Conrad had not decided with whom to partner her.

Juniors Hermani Patel and Elise Kney will pair up at three doubles.

“After that, it’s a crapshoot,” Conrad said, including the opening at two doubles. “I basically have seven girls vying for three positions, and I’ve been trying to piece together five new starters.”

The Hurricanes were on the court the week of Aug. 24 to fill those positions through challenge matches.

Right now, Conrad’s concern is how the hybrid school schedule will affect practices throughout the season, realizing that some players may not be able to get to practice on certain days. However, the fourth-year head coach is pleased that tennis teams will play competitively this fall.

“As someone who teaches government, I believe in allowing districts to make local decisions. Especially in a pandemic, it’s going to affect counties differently,” he said. “I’m glad they are allowing tennis, golf, and cross country to start right away.”
