Bethlehem Catholic girls’ tennis coach George Harmanos was putting the finishing touches on the Hawks’ line up the week before their first match scheduled for Aug. 31.
What needed to be decided before the season were the number one and number two singles’ spots, which will be held by sophomore Cara Magliochetti and senior Shannon Stewart. Challenge matches continued until their positions became more clear.
“The two are very close,” Harmanos said.
Returning to number three singles is junior Taylor Adams.
Junior Patti Superka and senior Alexa Schoenfield are the number two doubles pair, and sophomore Maddie Lennart and senior Cecile Szollas are at number three doubles.
Grace Hartman, Amber Simmons, and Isabella Bautista were vying for number four doubles positions.
“It’ll be a different kind of season. I’ve been a coach for like 1,000 years,” Harmanos laughed, “and I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Harmanos explained that Becahi will only play teams within Northampton County (Freedom, Liberty, Northampton, Easton, and Nazareth). Each county, the other two being Lehigh and Monroe, will have an individual champion.
“Districts will be a bonus, but if not, that’s OK,” he said. “Certainly, the girls all want to play, and go to school, and see their friends.”
Becahi’s first match was a home match against Easton.
