Fair enough: Two festivals keep spirit alive for canceled 2020 Allentown Fair

Pennsylvania’s Music Preservation Society (PAMPS) and The Great Allentown Fair will be giving the community an opportunity to get its music and Fair food fix during the Labor Day Weekend.

With the cancellation of the 2020 Great Allentown Fair because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Fair officials and PAMPS sought ways to fill the void.

Connoisseurs of such fare as sausage sandwiches, chicken fingers, corn dogs, funnel cake, and fried Oreos will have the opportunity to indulge their tastebuds at “Feast the Fair,” 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Sept. 4 through Sept. 7.

Popular food vendors will be on Fairgrounds property outside the Agri-Plex’s William T. Harris Agricultural Hall, serving up Fair food classics to go.

Participating are Bissinger Catering & Concessions, Danny’s Fine Foods, Joe’s Homemade Pierogies, John the Greek, Hoff’s Kettle Corn, Little Mike’s Fine Foods, Pies to Die For, Take a Taco, Wuchter’s Funnel Cake Stand and Vince’s Steaks.

Although admission is free, each attendee is asked to bring a dry or canned good donation to place in the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley collection bin to continue the Fair’s “Preview Night” tradition.

“We encourage everyone to come out and get their Fair food fix over Labor Day weekend at the Allentown Fairgrounds. It will be a great event that will support not only our food concessionaires but our local community through your donation of canned goods to Second Harvest Food Bank,” says Allentown Fair President Beverly Gruber.

The Allentown Fairgrounds Farmers Market will be open 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. Sept. 4 and 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sept. 5.

PAMPS will present “Music ALIVE,” an afternoon and evening of live music entertainment Sept. 5, Farmerama Stage, along the Fairgrounds’ Liberty Street side, west of 19th Street.

Performances begin at 1:30 p.m. and continue until 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5.

The BC Combo and the Jimmy Supra-Sarah Ayers Band are scheduled for the afternoon sets from 1:30 - 5 p.m. Sept. 5.

The Large Flowerheads will perform at the twilight concert from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5.

As PAMPS has sought to preserve, promote and provide education on music from the Keystone State, the event’s award-winning bands are locally-based.

The Large Flowerheads brings to life the groovy music of the 1960s, channeling the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Sonny & Cher, Jefferson Airplane and more.

The BC Combo, formerly BC & The Blues Crew, bring with them a passion for blues, jazz, swing, folk R&B and soul.

The Jimmy Supra-Sarah Ayers Band features high-energy, harmonica and guitar-driven blues rock.

PAMPS Executive Director Carole Gorney says that after the not-for-profit’s annual Memorial Day event became a coronavirus casualty, it was decided that “Music ALIVE” could provide an opportunity for community outreach. It would also be beneficial to the Lehigh County Agricultural Society, as the nonprofit owner and operator of the Fairgrounds.

Service Electric Cable TV will telecast the performances live.

Gorney says that ticket sales are to help fund school programming that PAMPS plans to expand on. She encourages anyone viewing the televised shows to make a donation.

Tickets for “Music ALIVE” are per seat for either the afternoon show or the twilight concert. An all-day pass is available for both performances. Tables will be provided. Rain date is Sept. 6.

Attendees for both events are asked to follow social distancing guidelines and wear a face mask.
