Coplay: Borough flags honor workers

With the Labor Day holiday this weekend, American flags have been hoisted on poles along Second and Chestnut streets to pay tribute to the workers now and those in the past.

The flags will remain on the poles through Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

The traditional Labor Day picnic held by the Lehigh Valley Labor Council at Saylor Park has since been moved to other locations across the region.

Coplay, unlike other communities in the area and across the country, does not have its streets named after presidents and other notable historical figures. The matter was brought to the foreground when historic statues were toppled across the country.

The borough has its streets named numerically from Second to 12th streets, with other streets named after trees such as Chestnut, Cherry, Maple and Oak.

There are, however, names that are familiar to residents. For example, David Saylor, founder of Coplay Cement Company, has the Saylor Ball Field and the Saylor Park named in his honor.

Daniel Schreiber, one of the early founders of the borough, has a street named after him between Second and Fourth streets.

Decades ago, the Coplay School District had schools named after former Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
