Catty still hopeful a fall season gets played

Despite the recent swirling winds of the PIAA involving the possibility of an upcoming canceled sports season, Catasauqua athletic director Tom Moll remains confident that the school’s teams will be playing this fall.

“For all of us, we want some kind of season,” he said. “Our school district voted to do what the PIAA wants the schools to do. We are shooting for our first fall games on Sept. 11.

“That would be the usual three-week practice period before the first game.”

Moll referred to the most recent PIAA news that had schools use a two-week push back to their first week of practice, waiting until August 24. The football acclimatization period would have begun this Monday (Aug. 10).

On August 6, PA Gov. Tom Wolf “strongly” recommended no sports should be held until January 1. 2021. This past Tuesday, the Philadelphia Public League followed the governor’s lead and postponed all sports until next year.

Moll stated that all fall sports will continue with their current workouts leading up to the first full day of practice. He added that some team’s schedules could be altered with the new start date. Football will open with Marian on Sept. 11.

Head cross country coach Kyle Rusnock plans to stay the course.

“We are going to continue to work out,” he said. “We want to make sure we are staying in shape leading up to the beginning of the season if we have one or when it will start.

“It’s a crazy situation, and obviously we want to start and have a season. I also understand it’s been a tiresome time for the ADs and the PIAA. It’s one of those no-win situations. I just think positive the season will be a go.”

If all sports are halted, it can present an interesting start to the winter sports season. Head boys’ basketball coach Eric Snyder doesn’t see it as positive scenario.

“Fall sports being postponed or canceled is not a good sign for winter sports,” said Snyder. “Postponing fall sports is going to seriously hinder the start of winter. There is no definite end in sight for COVID and nothing seems to be indicating there is a positive outlook.

“We can’t have a bubble like the NBA.”

Head baseball coach Steve Bradley, whose team recently competed in St. Luke’s Lehigh Valley Baseball Showcase, also sees a total negative side to the proposed situation.

“This is all political, there is no doubt about it,” he stressed. “There isn’t any strong medical evidence that the kids shouldn’t be playing. They are hurting the kids by not allowing them to play in the fall.”
